Going Half-sies

halfsies.jpgThis article about the (apparently) large numbers of Orthodox teenagers texting on Shabbat, an activity that is forbidden according to Jewish law has gone viral throughout the Jewish blogosphere over the past few days.

There is, of course, a comment thread a mile long following the article. Here, in a nutshell, are the types of responses I've seen:

1. These kids and their parents are hypocrites for calling themselves "Orthodox."
2. There is no such things as "half-Shabbos," just like there's no such thing as being "a little pregnant" - you're either in or out.
3. These kids are addicted to their cell phones, how horrible, we should take them away from them right now but especially on Shabbos because it's clear they can't make any decisions for themselves.
4. Does half-Shabbos lead to half-kashrut? This is a slippery slope and we should be worried/scared/horrified that there are any kids that consider this okay. What will happen to observant Judaism????
5. It is sad that these kids' parents are working so hard to raise them/educate them/put a roof over their heads and this is how they repay them.
6. There are plenty of Orthodox people who disobey other Jewish laws, this is no different. *shrug*
6. Texting isn't actually forbidden on Shabbos, so they can do what they want.
7. You're an idiot, texting is definitely forbidden on Shabbos, check your sources and shut up until you do.

Wow. These responses fall into a few large categories:
  • Judgemental
  • Inflexible
  • Apathetic
  • Scared

Are those the attitudes with which we want Jewish  behavior to be challenged?

I've seen a few responses that say, "I understand." or  "They are just exploring."  Those are loving, and sort of understanding.  Still not helpful, though.

I haven't yet seen one that says "This is a challenge to us to better engage them in conversations on the sanctity/beauty/importance of Shabbat, so see what they think and how they feel."

Huh. Thoughts?

Beat M*ch*g*n!

It's the most wonderful time of the year.

No, I'm not talking about that time (although Chanukah is pretty awesome). I'm talking about the OSU vs. Michigan Game!

The excitement begins at Hilell tomorrow with a Jump In Mirror Lake Midnight Breakfast. After you have frozen your skivvies off by jumping in, head on over here for a Midnight Breakfast which will start at 10pm. You can leave your dry clothes here during the day and use our showers after the big jump. We're your Mirror Lake Recovery Center!

Friday is the world famous Meshuganote Beat M*ch*g*n Shabbat! At 6pm, we'll be having our usual enlightening services. At 7 is a Buckeye tailgate feast, and then at 8 stick around for The Meshuganote (OSU's co-ed Jewish Acapella choir) Concert for some spirited fight songs, pop music favoirtes, and Hebrew tunes.

It's gonna be a blast!

Thursday Night Lights

Are you ready for some FOOTBALL?

Then head on over here tonight to join us as we watch the Cleveland Browns play the Denver Broncos. It all goes down at 8pm. We'll supply the munchies, all you need to bring is your spirit.

Also, there is a special "pre-event event" (?) at 7:15 if you're from Cleveland. (If you're not from Cleveland you can come too, just don't trash talk the Browns while you're there)

Thanks to everyone who came to Ohio Loves Israel this past Sunday. It was a great success with over 80 in attendance! There were so many amazing speakers, and the debate between Susan Gellman and Brad Kastan was fascinating. My favorite seminar was Amir Yarchi's (Cincinnati's emissary from Israel) presentation on Israel's portrayal in the media. What was yours?

It all begins this Friday at 6pm with Reform and Conservative services. Then at 7, it's all about the delcious FREE dinner. What's next, you ask? Well it's a very special Shabbat Song Session full of ruach (spirit). We'll sing all your favorites from summer camp. Feel free to request a tune!
